Drew Powell is an American actor known for his versatility and dynamic performances in film, television, and on stage. A natural in front of both the camera and live audiences, Powell’s dedication to his craft has earned him recognition as one of Hollywood’s most reliable and engaging character actors.
He can be seen in the hit Max series The Pitt (from John Wells, starring Noah Wyle) and has upcoming roles in the Amazon feature Crime 101 (with Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, and Barry Keoghan), the Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company film The Unbreakable Boy, Amazon Prime’s Criminal (with Emilia Clarke, Charlie Hunnam, and Luke Evans), and he will reprise his fan-favorite role as Jack Hurley on Leverage: Redemption.
In 2024, Drew portrayed key roles in the Netflix hit Monsters: The Lyle and Eric Menendez Story (with Javier Bardem and Chloe Sevigny), the Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Co. feature Ordinary Angels (starring Hilary Swank and Alan Ritchson), and the recurring role of Cyrus in the final season of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Powell first gained widespread recognition for his role as Butch Gilzean/Solomon Grundy in the hit Fox series Gotham(2014–2019), where he portrayed the complex, morally ambiguous character of a gangster rising to power in Gotham City. His portrayal, which evolved from a henchman to a key figure in the city’s criminal underworld, earned him critical acclaim and a loyal fan following.
Before Gotham, Powell appeared in a variety of notable roles on both the small and big screens, further showcasing his range: from a young Hoss Cartwright in a Bonanza prequel to a double-agent killer in the CBS drama The Mentalist. Drew made guest appearances on shows like Ray Donovan, The Office, Young Sheldon, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy, Malcolm in the Middle, and True Blood, among others. His film credits include Straw Dogs (with Alexander Skarsgård, James Marsden, and Kate Bosworth), Message from the King (with Chadwick Boseman), and Touchback (with Kurt Russell).
Having started on stage, theater has always been close to Drew’s heart. He made his Broadway debut in The Pee Wee Herman Show at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre (which was also filmed and shown on HBO).
Drew was raised in Lebanon, Indiana, and attended DePauw University, where he graduated with honors and later gave the commencement address in 2019. At DePauw, he participated in theater, film, athletics, and even had his own radio show! He is an avid sports fan, particularly of Indiana teams, and still enjoys playing basketball, tennis, pickleball, and golf whenever he can.
Outside of his acting career, Drew Powell is known for his down-to-earth personality and commitment to his family and community. He is a board member of the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry (nhifp.org) and has been active with charities like Week of Compassion, St. Jude Children's Hospital, and Homes 4 Families (helping low-income veterans secure new homes). His commitment to using his platform for good speaks to his character both on and off-screen.
Drew lives with his wife Veronica, son Leo and dog Elsie in Los Angeles. He is a legal resident of Australia and England. (2012)
